O-zone Terrain Notes

Lancaster University

A varied area, much of it rolling parkland with small woodland sections. The complex buildings can make for very tricky navigation, but this part of the area is unlikely to be used for the novice courses.

Salt Ayre

A compact area close to the Sports Centre.  There are large grassy areas with many thickets, plus the cycle racing track, running track and other sporting facilities.  This area is just big enough to give the level of challenge needed for the novice courses.

Eaves Wood

A popular small limestone wood, owned in part by the National Trust.  There are many paths, but some densely wooded sections as well.  A greater technical challenge is possible in this area.

Williamson Park

Well known to citizens of Lancaster, yet still tricky to navigate around.  The park was created out of old quarry workings, and there are many crags and steep slopes partially covered by trees and rhododendrons.  The many paths make the shorter courses quite easy, but there is sure to be some rougher terrain found on the Orange!

Helsington Barrows

This area sits on top of a limestone escarpment, and is mostly fast open grassland, with only a small wooded section.  There are a few paths and walls, but the complex contour and rock detail makes this a much more challenging area to navigate around.  There will be a full choice of courses to suit all standards of orienteers.
