Another great turnout, some returning for another week and others for their first ever event. Results are here. To analyse your performance, take a look at the Winsplits or Splitsbrowser links, then draw your route on RouteGadget.
O-zone orienteering events are suitable for all ages since we provide courses of varying levels of challenge. Parents of very young children may prefer to accompany them on their course. Confident youngsters from about 8 years should be able to complete the White course unaided, however this depends very much on the child. Where possible we are also offering a "string" course, which toddlers can manage on their own, by following the string! No special clothes or shoes are needed, although it makes sense to dress as for a walk in the park. The shorter courses involve paths and some grass which may be wet. Event 3 is in Eaves Wood, which can be muddy at times. A compass (and the ability to use it) is not essential, though it can help on the harder courses. It may take anything from 10 minutes to an hour to complete a course, depending on experience and whether you run or not. Remember to allow time for a second course, if you want, and to discuss your course after completing it. Typically an hour or slightly more should cover your whole outing.
To save a little time you could download the entry form and bring it along already completed.
If travelling to Salt Ayre by car, look out for signs to the sports centre. Drive past the car park at the front of the main building, which is usually full anyway, and proceed past the building (on its right side) into the number 2 car park at the rear. Registration will be at the far side of this car park, probably in a tent or if the weather is really nice, outdoors. We will not be using the sports centre but the toilets are available for use by orienteers. Registration opens at 11.30, and start times are 12 - 2pm.
A weekly newsletter has been started, to run during the O-zone series. Topics will include latest results, league tables and orienteering tips. Issue 1 was available at the first event. In case you missed it, it is now on-line here. This is a 383 Kb pdf.
RouteGadget has now been set up to include the Lancaster University O-zone event. Draw your route and compare it with others, then rerun your race using the animation feature.

The first event of the series, held at Lancaster University today, saw a very good turnout of newcomers plus a few old hands. The event was blessed by pleasant weather, and many enjoyed themselves so much that they ran a second or even third course! Martyn's string course was also a success, and will be repeated at future events where possible. Note that 2nd or 3rd runs are free of charge at the O-zone! For results click here.
For anyone living in or near Lancaster it is quite possible to travel to the event using public transport, there being a regular bus service. You can also cycle there using the University Cycle Way. If arriving by car you will need to look out for signs to the parking area, which is at the sports pavilion, on the left of the main drive before the duck pond. The entrance to the car park is level with the end of the dual carriageway which extends from the A6. Please be aware that this is a University open day, so there will be a larger than usual amount of vehicular traffic expected.
The first event in the series will be at Lancaster University on Saturday 22nd September. Start times are 12pm - 2pm, and you can register from 11.30am onwards. Thereafter there will be three more Saturday events, each with starts between 12pm and 2pm. More details may be found on the fixtures page.
